I took this photo this summer of the 9/11 Memorial with the new One World Trade standing tall behind it.
When I think of September 11, 2001, this is what I always remember first:
I was a young mom of a one-year-old and pregnant with my second baby. Just like everyone else, I watched the news stories that unfolded for weeks following the tragic events of that day. But the ones that really stood out to me were those of the mamas who were giving birth (some even the very next day!) to babies who lost their dads on 9/11. My heart broke for those ladies whose lives were suddenly so altered. Here they were, with brand new babies – such joy – and at the same time, such sadness that they had just lost the men who should have been there to celebrate those births.
And now, I always think of those kids. There are over 100 of them out there, who are now 11+ years old. I hope they are proud of their heroes, their dads. The ones they never got the chance to meet.
